At the centre of every tooth lies a living tissue called the pulp, made up of nerves and blood vessels. When deep decay, a crack or an injury reaches this tissue, it can become inflamed or infected and may form a painful abscess. Root canal treatment carefully removes the affected pulp, disinfects the inner canals and seals them, which in most cases allows you to keep your natural tooth rather than having it extracted.
You may need this treatment if you notice a lingering or throbbing toothache that worsens at night, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold drinks, swelling or a small bump on the gum near a tooth, or a tooth that has turned darker. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all and the problem is spotted on a routine X-ray, which is why regular check-ups help catch issues before they become more serious.
Your visit begins with an examination and a digital X-ray to map the shape and number of canals. The tooth is then numbed with local anaesthetic so you stay comfortable throughout. Your dentist isolates the tooth with a protective rubber dam, cleans and shapes the canals using fine rotary instruments and an electronic apex locator, rinses them with disinfecting solutions and fills them with a biocompatible material. Most treatments are completed in one or two visits.
Mild tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal and usually settles with the pain relief your dentist recommends. Avoid chewing on the tooth until the final filling or crown is placed, as this protects it from fracture. At Smile Clinic we combine modern equipment with a calm, gentle approach, and you can continue your care at our clinic in Damascus.
