Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that makes up for missing jawbone by adding a graft material that encourages your body to grow new bone in its place. After a tooth is removed, the bone in that area gradually shrinks, and advanced gum disease or injury can also cause bone loss. This can make implants difficult to place later and slowly change the shape of the face.
You may need a bone graft if you are planning an implant but there is not enough bone to hold it, after an extraction to preserve the volume of bone in the socket, or when the sinus sits close to the upper back teeth and needs to be lifted. Your dentist decides whether a graft is needed, and which type, after a clinical examination and a 3D CBCT scan.
Grafting is carried out under local anaesthetic and may be done at the same visit as the implant or several months beforehand, depending on how much bone has been lost. We use approved graft materials and protective membranes that shield the area while it heals. New bone usually takes around four to six months to form before it is ready to receive an implant.
Mild swelling or discomfort for a few days afterwards is common and can usually be managed with the pain relief your dentist prescribes, along with soft foods, no smoking and no vigorous rinsing in the first days. At Dr. Rami Ezzeddin Clinics, we plan every case carefully and follow you through each stage until healing is complete and you are ready for the next step of your treatment.
